AISI 1045 STEEL FORGING

As a medium-carbon structural steel, AISI 1045 steel has good hot forging properties and strong deformation capacity. The core points of its forging process are as follows:

PreheatingInitial forging temperatureFinal forging temperatureForging ratioCooling method
600-700°C1100-1200°C≥800℃≥4:1Slow cooling

It should be noted here that 1045 steel can be air-cooled when necessary to achieve a certain effect of refining the grains, but it should never be cooled rapidly.

AISI 1045 STEEL HEAT TREATMENT

To achieve the desired strength, hardness, toughness, and wear resistance, AISI 1045 steel can be processed using various heat treatment techniques.

  • AISI 1045 Steel Normalizing

The normalizing process for AISI 1045 steel focuses on improving its microstructure and strength. It can be used as a pretreatment process before quenching and tempering, or as the final heat treatment process for parts with low performance requirements. Therefore, normalizing is widely used in 1045 steel.

  • AISI 1045 Steel Annealing

The annealing process for AISI 1045 steel focuses on reducing hardness to facilitate machining. It mainly includes soften annealing and stress-relief annealing.

Soften AnnealingStress-relief Annealing
780-820°C550-650°C

The difference between the two is that stress-relief annealing does not change the original microstructure and hardness, while soften annealing gives 1045 steel a coarse lamellar pearlite and ferrite microstructure, with a hardness of less than 200 HBW.

  • AISI 1045 Steel Quenching & Tempering

This is the core heat treatment process for 1045 steel, the purpose of which is to obtain good comprehensive mechanical properties.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS FOR AISI 1045 STEEL

Can 1045 steel be nitrided?2026-01-24T15:01:42+08:00

1045 steel can be nitrided, but I don’t recommend it as the first choice.

Reasons:

1. Lack of nitriding basis: 1045 steel contains none of the strong nitride-forming elements Cr, Mo, and Al.

2. Poor nitriding effect: Surface hardness and wear resistance are far lower than alloy nitriding steel.

3. Long processing time and high cost, not cost-effective.

More recommended:

Induction hardening

Can 1045 steel be carburized?2026-01-24T15:00:46+08:00

1045 steel can be carburized, but I don’t recommend it.

Reasons:
1. Carbon content is already sufficient, Unnecessary.
2. Carburizing followed by quenching makes it prone to brittle fracture, and the core toughness is actually worse, Ineffective.

I recommend:

Induction hardening

Can normalizing be used as the final heat treatment for 1045 steel?2026-01-24T14:05:51+08:00

Normalizing 1045 steel can be used as a final heat treatment, but it is only suitable for light/medium load parts with low performance requirements.

If higher strength, toughness, or wear resistance is required, normalizing is insufficient, and quenching and tempering or subsequent surface strengthening must be used.

Is 1045 steel suitable for cold working?2026-01-21T19:11:46+08:00
1045 steel can be cold-worked via room-temperature plastic deformation processes. As a medium carbon steel with limited plasticity, it requires strict process control:
  • Cold drawing:Most common; spheroidizing annealed material + controlled deformation + intermediate/stress-relief annealing → high-precision bars/wires.
  • Cold bending:Feasible; anneal to soften, avoid small bending radii to prevent cracking.
  • Cold heading:Only for small-deformation simple parts (e.g., small bolt heads); needs spheroidizing annealing; not for large/complex parts.
  • Cold extrusion:High difficulty; only for small deformations; requires good lubrication + annealing; not for large deformations.
Core: Annealing for softening, controlled deformation, and stress relief are the key requirements.

Is 1045 steel weldable?2026-01-21T15:47:32+08:00

With relatively poor weldability, 1045 steel is not suitable for direct welding.

The core issue of 1045 steel in welding is its high hardening tendency, which causes martensite formation in the heat-affected zone and increases the risk of cold cracking.

How to prevent?Key points:

  1. Preheating is required (150–300℃).
  2. Use a low-hydrogen welding process.
  3. Control welding heat input; interpass temperature should not exceed the preheating temperature.
  4. Post-weld slow cooling + stress-relief annealing

Is 1045 steel easy to harden?2026-01-21T15:25:43+08:00

1045 steel is a low-hardenability steel, which is a significant weakness.

The low alloy element content of 1045 steel results in a high critical cooling rate during quenching and a limited hardenability depth (water quenching: approximately 20–30mm, oil quenching: only 10–15mm).

Therefore, 1045 steel is ideal for small-to-medium parts (shafts, gears, bolts) with low overall hardenability needs or only surface hardening requirements. For large cross-section parts or those needing high core strength, alloy steels(4140 steel) with better hardenability are preferred.

Is 1045 steel easy to machine?2026-01-21T14:48:55+08:00

1045 steel is relatively easy to machine among medium carbon steels.

The heat treatment state of 1045 steel has a major impact on its machinability. For 1045 steel, machinability decreases in the following order of heat treatment:

  1. Annealed (Best)
  2. Normalized
  3. Quenched & Tempered
  4. Quenched (Worst)
