S235JR (steel number: 1.0038) is a non-alloy structural steel under the European standard EN 10025-2.

As one of the most widely used general-purpose structural steels, S235JR has moderate strength, good toughness, and excellent weldability.

S235JR has a minimum yield strength of 235MPa and an impact toughness of not less than 27J at +20℃, which can meet the needs of most ordinary load-bearing structures in normal temperature environments. Therefore, it is widely used in industries such as construction, bridges and machinery manufacturing.

What does S235JR mean?

The “S” in the grade designation represents structural steel. The number 235 indicates a minimum yield strength of 235 MPa, while JR represents the impact energy quality grade, with a Charpy V-notch impact energy ≥27 J at +20℃ (“J” stands for Joule, and “R” indicates room temperature).

Similar grades include S235J0 (0℃ impact) and S235J2 (-20℃ impact). The latter should be selected when higher low-temperature toughness is required.
